As many people know, it’s hard as hell to get an internship in college. For many of us, it’s a long trial and error process of online applications, interviews, networking events and rejections.
“You don’t have enough experience.”
“We’re looking for a higher GPA.
“Your skills aren’t quite what we’re looking for.”
“Sorry, we do not sponsor international students.”
College students often are sent back to Square One. They’re left feeling discouraged after every rejection. With each “no” that hits their email inbox, they’re left feeling more and more defeated. In fact, everyone reading this has felt this way at some point or another.
Akosua Boadi-Agyemang certainly did. In November of 2017, she made this post on her LinkedIn page.
Akosua had tried over and over and over again, to no avail. Yet she didn’t give up. She took a different approach and tagged LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner in her post, stating who she was before she gave her qualifications and described what she was looking for. Little did she know this post would go viral, and three months later, she would accept an internship at Microsoft for the summer of 2018.
Because of Akosua’s success, she created #TheBoldJourney, which encourages individuals to step outside of their comfort zone and take on life’s challenges.
“My Face all summer 18. Amazing People. Amazing Teams. Memories. New Friendships. Please don’t pinch me-this is one dream I don’t want to wake up from.”
Even though it seems you’re facing insurmountable challenges, and even though it seems you can’t do anything to get over that mountain, remember: It only seems that way. You can never give up, and you can never stop going in.
